Commute Button

I'm watching the White House press briefing over the Scooter Libby commutation, and fifteen minutes in, I can't believe the referee hasn't stopped the fight. After nearly seven years of bullshit, the press corps finally seems to have gotten angry. Tony Snow is getting the everloving shit kicked out of him, and it looks like even he doesn't believe the nonsense coming out of his mouth.

I'm reminded of that old Faith No More video that ends with the fish flopping on the floor until it dies. Except Tony looks even worse.

Update: This was such a laugher of a press briefing, I knew Crooks and Liars would have the video up as quick as they could. They haven't disappointed, and the full assault on Tony Snow is now available here.

Getting a press secretary with cancer was a brilliant move on behalf of the Bush administration...watching this, I actually felt a little sorry for the guy.

I just caught it on CNN, but C-SPAN would be the place to go, as the artery-clogging Mitchell notes.

The transcript takes a while to go up and, in any case, you need to hear the hoots of derision coming from the reporters and the constipated look on Snow's face to really soak it in.

The drinking lamp is lit.

Shit. I thought it was already lit.

No, no. That was me. I've been lit for a while now.

Rumor around the internet tubes is that Libby's sentence was commuted rather than pardoned so that Libby could still plead the 5th if he had to...like if he were called to testify against Karl, Dick, or W.

Yeah, I think that's right, Bob.

The appeals process will continue -- so poor treasonous Scooter can clear his WASPy name! -- and that means two things.

First, Scooter would plead the fizzle whenever called before Congress, thereby making him hold his tongue. (And with the possibility of a full pardon still out there, he'd behave himself.)

Second, the White House could continue its "we're not going to comment on an ongoing investigation/trial/appeals process so we don't influence events" bullshit. Even though you might think a commutation was a pretty big fucking comment.

You know, Bush may escape impeachment, but I'm confident that when this country catches its breath and scholars get their hands on the records, he'll go down as one of the worst of all time.
