Laugh Riot

This past Sunday, the New York Times Magazine had an issue devoted to Hollywood humor. One of the smaller features was a running bit where they asked comic actors and directors to name their five favorite funny films.

The answers were interesting. Some replies were clearly tongue-in-cheek, with Judd Apatow selecting Terms of Endearment and David Cross selecting Rent. Some were on the borderline between sarcasm and sincerity, like Will Ferrell giving the nod to Weekend at Bernie's. And many more were going for old school comedy cred, with numerous selections of trailblazers like the Marx Brothers, W.C. Fields, and Buster Keaton and a disturbingly high number of Abbott & Costello and Laurel & Hardy flicks.

Anyway, I thought this might make for a nice time-killing exercise for the day.

What are your five favorite funny films? To start the ball rolling, here are mine:
Blazing Saddles
Dr. Strangelove
The Jerk
Raising Arizona
Waiting for Guffman
Drop your own favorite five in the comments, and/or your bewilderment over what I chose or ignored.

This is Spinal Tap -"You can't really dust for vomit. "

Blazing Saddles -" Excuse me while I whip this out."

Animal House -"Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son. "

Chasing Amy - "Fuck Lando Calrissian!"

Super Troopers -"Hey, let's pop some Viagras and issue tickets with raging, mega-huge boners."

One of my favorite quotes from Chasing Amy, Kind of sums up my taste in movies - "It's like my grandma always said... 'The real money's in the dick and fart jokes.' She was a church lady. "

The Blues Brothers (yes, I have played a chicken-wire gig)
This Is Spinal Tap
Blazing Saddles
M*A*S*H ("Goddamn Army!")
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (A møøse once bit my sister...)

Along those lines, I believe "Miss Taylor's Mooses" would be a great band name.

Excellent choices, everyone. Honestly, I'd actually come close to naming each and every one of those on my top five, except for "Super Troopers" and "M*A*S*H" and now I'm angry for forgetting both.

And I can't believe I didn't think to add some representative quotes. Here goes.

Blazing Saddles: "Mongo only pawn in game of life."

Dr. Strangelove: "Gentlemen! You can't fight in here, this is the War Room!"

The Jerk: "He hates those cans! Stay away from the cans!"

Raising Arizona: "Why do you say you feel trapped in a man's body?" "Well ... sometimes, I gets the menstrual cramps real hard."

Waiting for Guffman: "Why are you whispering? I'm right here.

Airplane!
Midnight Run
Spinal Tap
Planes, Trains and Automobiles
40 Year Old Virgin (probably won't stand the test of time, but the funniest thing I've seen in years, and I can't think of anything else...)

Others: Rushmore, Strange Brew, Pee Wee's Big Adventure

Best Brooks? Young Frankenstein
Best Allen? Sleeper

A few off the top of my head:

Animal House
Airplane
Young Frankenstein
Bananas
Dazed & Confused

Probably 5 more that I'm just forgetting.

By the way, OM, I saw a classic Marx Bros. flick on TCM a few months ago, and I LAUGHED MY ASS OFF. They're legitimately funny.

Mike, let me be clear -- I think the Marx Brothers, Keaton and sometimes Fields are legitimately funny. I almost made Duck Soup one of the five.

The ones that perplexed me were the Laurel and Hardy or Abbott and Costello films. Seriously, Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein?

I went back and forth on which Brooks film I would put there, YF or Saddles, but I had to give the egde to Harvey Corman.

I know. I've seen Blazing Saddles many more times than YF, so I laugh more at the latter.

But I know that as a kid, I laughed harder at BS than YF the first time I saw it. Coin toss really.

Same with Woody. I love all his films, but for the pure comedy (Especially your early funny stuff) it's a toss-up between Sleeper & Bananas. Sleeper's a "better movie," but Bananas is just funnier.

Good point about Sleeper. I need to watch that one again.
