And They'll Know We Are Christians By Our Love

Courtesy of Crooks and Liars, here's a disturbing story about an attack on the University of Kansas religious studies professor who proposed a course treating "intelligent design" as a religious myth.
A professor whose planned course on creationism and intelligent design was canceled after he sent e-mails deriding Christian conservatives was hospitalized Monday after what appeared to be a roadside beating.

University of Kansas religious studies professor Paul Mirecki said that the two men who beat him made references to the class that was to be offered for the first time this spring.

Originally called "Special Topics in Religion: Intelligent Design, Creationism and other Religious Mythologies," the course was canceled last week at Mirecki's request.

The class was added after the Kansas State Board of Education decided to include more criticism of evolution in science standards for elementary and secondary students.

"I didn't know them," Mirecki said of his assailants, "but I'm sure they knew me."
Way to beat the infidel, boys. If a good ass-kicking doesn't get the message of Jesus Christ across, I don't know what will. Maybe a giant cross, lit on fire and stuck in his front yard? That would demonstrate the shining light and warm embrace of true Christianity for sure!

Sheesh. I do love the irony here -- the opponents of evolution have once again proven themselves to be the least evolved people in the country.

I see John Cole made the same joke about the perpetrators not being evolved. I guess it was an easy one, but one we came to independently.

I can't wait to hear O'Reilly defend them...

The current tactic seems to be to deny that it happened at all. I suppose the story could be a fake, but this guy would have to be batshit crazy to beat himself up and lie about it, knowing that he'd probably end his career as a result.

Those who roughed up the professor are evidence less-than-intelligent design is at work making this old world the way it is. And as mentioned, they're also proof evolution is progressing very unevenly.

Maybe I missed something in Sunday School, but I don't remember being told anything about going out and beating up a skeptic for Jesus. The message was more about peace, love and turning the other cheek.

I did that joke in Alabama, and these three rednecks met me after the show. "Hey buddy, c'mere. Hey Mister Comedian, c'mere." Yeah, I love that move (makes shoving motion) "C'mere!" Not a physics major, I think that's a safe bet. "Mister Funnyman, c'mere. Hey buddy, we're Christians and we don't like what you said." I said, then forgive me.
