"Some people in the military signed a contract with a private contractor, and the private contactor is alleged to have written accurate stories, but paid someone in the media in Iraq to carry the story," Mr. Rumsfeld said. "That's an allegation. I don't know if it's true yet."
Well, as long as its a contractor's fault, I guess you can't hold anyone in office accountable. Can you?

You know, if the media were awhirl with rumors about who my replacement might be, I think I'd try a little harder to justify keeping my job.
"Secretary of Defense Lieberman." Whooooooo. Whoo.
Ugh. I'll be at the bar.
To be fair, ignorance is just about the only plea to which these guys can cop credibly. Not that that makes it okay.
Sec Def Lieberman does indeed sound scarry, but I really do think he'd be better than Rummy. Politically it might be a wash, but I think Lieberman would be a much better day-to-day manager of the pentagon and the military. At least contracts might be bid out fairly.
I'm sure our stable friends in the Middle East would embrace him as a brother.
I'm just not crazy about Lieberman putting a bipartisan face on Iraq right as it so clearly goes to shit.
The Republicans wanted all the credit when things were looking good, and I say we let them hog the spotlight all the way to the end.
