Rush to Judgment

It seems the GOP spin machine is set on full - attack all Democrats who question the "strategy for Success" in Iraq. Dean is under fire for questioning if winning is possible - or if possible is it worth 23,000 American lives. Other media outlets, such as "Hillbilly Heroin" friend Rush Limbaugh, are calling Kerry a traitor by twisting his words into calling American troops "Terrorists." Yes, the man who actually served and received Purple Hearts.

While clicking around wondering how low can these folks get - I found my answer - The Rush Limbaugh "adopt a soldier" program. My first thought was that this was a nice idea. They must be:

(1) Buying soldiers who have lost limbs quality prosthetic replacements;
(2) Help make payments on mortgages or car loans while the primary income holder had to take a cut in pay;
(3) Offer free marriage and PTSD psychological support;
(4) Buy airline tickets for them to come back to the states during free time;
(5) Holiday presents for soldiers' children to say thanks for their mom or dad's sacrifice.

Well, I was wrong. As an "adopted soldier", they will "receive unfettered access to Rush 24/7 online as well as every big, colorful issue of The Limbaugh Letter." The cost? Good news; it's discounted! Its ONLY $49.99!

Now, I know us liberuls are all going to hell and don't deserve freedom or fresh air; but, come on, $50 for something which is essentially free for you to distribute. This may not be direct war profiteering; but it damn sure stinks like it.

What. A. Douchebag.

I can't believe Armed Services Radio carries that asswipe.

In typical liberal fashion, you get it wrong. Anytime a conservative challenges the words of a Democrat he is accused of "spinning" or "attacking." It's actually a simple concept called "responding." Were Democrats not ATTACKING when they called Bush a LIAR and call this A WAR FOR OIL and THE WRONG WAR IN THE WRONG PLACE AT THE WRONG TIME? You don't want to hear the rebuttal, do you? That's SPIN to you. Dean, as HEAD of the DNC, is calling for troop withdrawal. The GOP disagrees and people like you refuse to open your minds to an opposing view. Dean cites 80% of Iraqis want us to leave but offers NO PROOF where this statistic comes from. Other than that he has NO PLAN ON PAPER FOR HOW TO ACCOMPLISH THIS WITHDRAWAL OR "REDEPLOYMENT" as he calls it.

Kerry was indeed insulting the troops; he cited incidents where troops were "invading homes in the middle of the night, scaring kids and children and.....you know...women.." and then said IRAQIs should be doing that! Just because he has three purple hearts doesn't mean he can't be WRONG and purposely LIE seeing how he has NO EVIDENCE WHATSOEVER that such incidents occurred.

And since you're obviously not a listener, you are misinformed about the "Adopt a Soldier" program. This program was requested BY A SOLDIER IN IRAQ who was complaining that Armed Services radio only carried one hour of Rush's 3-hour show. At the suggestion of this soldier who like MOST soldiers WOULD LIKE TO LISTEN TO Rush's entire show, Rush made the show available to them via this program. AND THE SOLDIERS DON'T PAY FOR IT, THOSE WHO SUPPORT THE MILITARY PAY FOR IT AND IT IS FORWARDED TO THOSE SERVING THE COUNTRY SO NEXT TIME DO A LITTLE RESEARCH BEFORE YOU "RUSH TO JUDGEMENT". THE REASON A.S.R. CARRIES "THAT ASSWIPE" is because the soldiers want to hear Rush, not Al Franken. Sorry. Deal with it, dude. Not everybody thinks like you.

Thank you and good day.

Lighten up, Francis.

If the troops hate Al Franken so much, why has the U.S.O. had him on four well-received tours of Iraq? And if Rush loves the troops so much, why hasn't he ever been there? Is the ass cyst that kept him out of Vietnam still preventing him from traveling there? Or is it the same conservative cop-out that the mean ol' liberals won't let him take part?

Deal with it, Dude. Not everyone thinks like you. And most of them are capable of writing their opinions without resorting to the toddler tantrum of WRITING IN ALL CAPS AS IF THAT MAKES WHAT YOU'RE SAYING TRUE.

Maybe because it's easily found
here and here and here and here.

And liberals are the ones with their heads in the sand? Right.

Got any proof of that? Google didn't turn anything up when I searched for what you presented as an actual quote.

You missed the entire point of the post. StudioDave was noting that if Rush really wanted to support the troops, why not just give this way -- we're talking about internet access to his own website and copies of his own newsletter, two products that are already produced and over which he presumably has absolute control. If the troops really want that, why not give it to them for free? Why make anyone out there pay for it?

Nice rebuttals, Otto. I'll jump on the pile here and say to mtnman that he's being very rich by saying that "people like you refuse to open your minds to an opposing view," particularly when person after person with mildly opposing views to those of the Prez has come out of the Bush White House and expressed concern at just how unwilling His Holiness is to listen to a single contrary word.

Incidentally, if y'all are interested in an adopt-a-soldier program more like the one you'd thought Rush's would be, then check out this site: http://www.soldiersangels.org/heroes/index.php
Or this one: http://www.adoptaplatoon.org/
There's another one I came across a couple months ago, but I can't find it. It's run by a soldier who served a couple tours and is back working to help support the troops now as a civilian.

I was at the grocery store looking for cheese, and in typical grocery store fashion they put the cheese in the WRONG PLACE. As anybody who likes cheese knows, IT DOES NOT NEED TO BE REFRIGERATED. For some reason, American grocery stores INSIST ON PUTTING CHEESE IN COLD STORAGE. Tell me, do you know how cheese is made? IT IS NOT MADE IN REFRIGERATORS. IT IS KEPT WARM so that the MILK CURDLES.

Grocery stores are insulting the very nature of cheese by keeping it alongside the milk. When I brought this to the attention of a grocery store employee, he called me "AN IDIOT" and told me that I was full of "MISPLACED HOSTILITY" and must have a "TINY, TINY PENIS."

I countered that he had NO EVIDENCE WHATSOEVER to make such a claim. He then pointed me to the shelf with VELVEETA on it. A SHELF WITH VELVEETA!

I could not believe my eyes! The only cheese in the grocery store that was NOT REFRIGERATED was VELVEETA. What does this say about the state of our grocery stores? OUR GROCERY STORES ARE STUCK IN A MINDLESS SWAMP OF CHEESE REFRIGERATING WHILE KEEPING A CHEMICALLY PROCESSED CHEESE PRODUCT AT ROOM TEMPERATURE.

I wrote a letter to the grocery store's corporate office, and they told me that not everyone wants their cheese at room temperature, and I would just have to deal with it, dude.

Well played, iRod. I should've known my use of "facts" and "logic" were no match for sheer mockery.

mtnman, thanks for your insights, but I fear the ringing in your ears caused by the oxycontin has confused you somewhat.

Generally, "responding" would sound more like "we were wrong on the WMD thing" or "we probably should have had a plan after the initial 'mission accomplished'"

That being said, the point of the article wasn't that money was being made at the expense of the troops (say like under armored troop transports), but off the larger goodwill of the American people.

Yes, these are their choices and they are free to make them.

Would it be better to give their money to the 5 services I listed? That is for the individual to rationalize for themselves.

Is this going to be a new theme of the website? Conservative trolls dropping in, shitting in the pool, and then running away before the rebuttals come in? We had the same thing in the War on Christmas post last week.

As our misplaced mountain man reminds us, it's a simple concept called "responding." Too bad in typical conservative fashion, he can't be bothered to listen.

This sounds a lot like how we got into Iraq. Let me check. Yes, it is.

A commenter over at Balloon Juice sums up my attitude on this conservative complaint perfectly.

To paraphrase:

Look, don't come to me complaining that liberals have no suggestions on how to unshit the bed in Iraq. Our advice from the get-go was that it would be a bad idea to shit the bed. But you did it anyway, and called us cowards and morons and traitors in the process. You shat the bed. You figure a way to unshit it.

"and there is no reason, bob, that young american soldiers need to be going into the homes of iraqis in the dead of night, terrorizing kids and children, you know, women...iraqis should be doing that" john kerry to bob schieffer on cbs face the nation december 4 2005 bottom of page 3 of the transcript and no caps so i don't upset the little hate fest going on here. i am sure kerry was being very sympathetic and encouraging to the troops. by the way, he forgot "old people" and little doggies". maybe rush should not comment on the war because he did not serve, nor should bill and hillary since they did not serve and you should not comment about rush because you have never been addicted to pain pills or had your own nationally syndicated radio talk show. and i cannot have an opinion on abortion 'cause i'm not a girl nor am i gay which lets me out of the gay marriage issue. in fact, i can't comment on anything, not even the issue of whether cheese should be refrigerated or not without being called some kind of name. but i can point out that limbaugh is matching donations so that kinda blows the war profiteering thing. he could give away free stuff but al franken could also pay back the money he took from that childrens charity to fund air america. i will now shut up, crawl back into my "conservative troll hole" and let you guys get back to the bush awol national guard story...

Thanks for the cite, mtnman. Much like your hero Rush, though, you've done a nice job of cutting our the context. Here's the full transcript without your convenient ellipses:

Sen. KERRY: ..."I think what we need to do is recognize what we all agree on, which is you've got to begin to set benchmarks for accomplishment. You've got to begin to transfer authority to the Iraqis. And there is no reason, Bob, that young American soldiers need to be going into the homes of Iraqis in the dead of night, terrorizing kids and children, you know, women, breaking sort of the customs of the--of--the historical customs, religious customs. Whether you like it or not...

SCHIEFFER: Yeah.

Sen. KERRY: ...Iraqis should be doing that. And after all of these two and a half years, with all of the talk of 210,000 people trained, there just is no excuse for not transferring more of that authority.

SCHIEFFER: Well, you're not saying we should stop fighting these insurgents?

Sen. KERRY: Absolutely not. In fact, in my plan, I have said very specifically that we need to keep Special Forces capacity. We need to have the ability to go after hard intelligence. We need to chase down Zarqawi. But we do not need 160,000 troops running around the country as a whole, exposing themselves as they are, feeding the notion of occupation.

In other words, what Kerry actually said doesn't remotely resemble what you claim it to be. He's not insulting the troops, he's trying to get them out of an impossible situation and get Iraqi troops in their place. Which is, by the way, pretty much what the president has been claiming all along. Does that mean George Bush hates our troops too?

you should not comment about rush because you have never been addicted to pain pills

The correct terminology is "hillbilly heroin."

And, no, I've never been addicted to OxyContin. But Rush has been, so let's go by his rules.

“There’s nothing good about drug use. We know it. It destroys individuals. It destroys families. Drug use destroys societies. Drug use, some might say, is destroying this country. And we have laws against selling drugs, pushing drugs, using drugs, importing drugs. And the laws are good because we know what happens to people in societies and neighborhoods which become consumed by them. And so if people are violating the law by doing drugs, they ought to be accused and they ought to be convicted and they ought to be sent up. What this says to me is that too many whites are getting away with drug use. Too many whites are getting away with drug sales. Too many whites are getting away with trafficking in this stuff. The answer to this disparity is not to start letting people out of jail because we’re not putting others in jail who are breaking the law. The answer is to go out and find the ones who are getting away with it, convict them and send them up the river, too.”
- Rush Limbaugh show, Oct. 5, 1995

but i can point out that limbaugh is matching donations so that kinda blows the war profiteering thing. he could give away free stuff but al franken could also pay back the money he took from that childrens charity to fund air america.

If Rush is matching donations, that's better. But I still don't see how a billionaire like him can't simply give the web access away for free to the troops. He claims they want it, he has full control over its distribution, so why not just give it to them?

As far as Franken goes, you're accusing him of stealing the money? You should alert the police about your inside information, because they've never made a claim about that. Or an official charge in the case at all.

i will now shut up, crawl back into my "conservative troll hole" and let you guys get back to the bush awol national guard story...

What are you babbling about? No one here has mentioned the Bush National Guard story except you.

Was that meant as snark about wacko liberals? Do you really think Bush fulfilled his National Guard service obligations?
