Yacht Rock

This may be old news to some of you, but I just stumbled across it for the first time: Yacht Rock, a five-part mockumentary about the heyday of "smooth music."

They hit all the lowlights of the late '70s and early '80s mellowness, including Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald, Steely Dan, Journey, Toto, Hall and Oates (pictured here in an alley songwriting showdown with Loggins and McDonald), a strongly hormonal Michael Jackson, and, for some reason, Vincent Price.

All the episodes are hysterical, but for maximum effect you should watch them in order. (That means start with #1, for those of you in the back of the classroom.)

Enjoy.

(Update: A belated, shamed hat tip to the excellent Stereogum for the link.)

Don't ever mention that great era of music w/o mentioning Christopher Cross again. B/c he could really use the exposure.

Actually, Christopher Cross is in two of the clips as well. He just keeps on "Sailing."

That's Cross in the red shirt behind Hall and Oates, in fact.

And for the most part, very factual -
-Toto did write "Human Nature" off Thriller and Hall and Oates were known to kill lovers of lite rock with harpoons and so on.

Otto Man, it's OK to give stereogum credit, you know.

Crap! Forgot the hat tip.

Man, I love Yacht Rock. I mean, I love the show, not the music. Although, if they did an episode with Phil Collins...

Also: "Fuck you, Loggins!" is my current favourite phrase.

I think a Phil Collins/Glenn Frey/"Miami Vice" episode would have to be somewhere down the line.
