Damn Yankees

The Braves and Red Sox may be out of it, but at least the evil corporate Yankees are now gone too. (Yes, I live in New York and hate the Yankees. If you lived here and saw the annual outbreak of Yankees Fever every October, you would too. So many people here jump on the bandwagon at the final lap, it's pathetic.)

I also hate the Yankees because they've become another home to the philosophy that if you have enough money, you can get away with anything. As we've just seen, the unfair salary rules of Major League Baseball make it possible to buy a World Series berth, but it's never a guarantee. For example, Alex Rodriguez made over $25 million this year, and yet he came to bat in the 9th inning tonight with an anemic .143 batting average for the postseason. He promptly hit into a double play.

Nice investment. Suck it, Steinbrenner.

I hear ya. I hate those Yankees fans. I lived in NY all through the 90s and had to put up with that shit.

I can remember being in a bar on the Upper East Side during the 96 World Series. When Jim Leyritz (a white catcher) hit the home run, one of these fairweather asshats jumping up and down turns to me and screams "Did you see that?!! Awesome!!" Then leans in and asks more quietly, "Was that Bernie? That was Bernie, right?" (Bernie is a black centerfielder.)

"Yeah, that was Bernie." I deadpan.

"Wooo!!! HOO!!!, BERN-NIE!"

I rest my case. Any city where the big fans wear "jerseys" with Babe Ruth's name and number on the back (or any Yankee—take your pick—#23's that also say "Mattingly") is a city full of ignorant jackasses. No Yankees player in history on a home or away jersey has ever had his name on his back. Never. But the shirts they sell at the stadium and all over town all say "Ruth," "Gehrig," "Jeter," etc.

Because they're all idiots.

When one of my good friends (a Yankee fan) turned thirty, a bunch of us were going to buy him a Bernie Williams game jersey—and any jersey I bought was only going to have a 51 on the back. So I go to the Yankees (official) store in Midtown. The only jerseys they had available were #00. And the name sewn on the back? "Costanza"

Good riddance.

I see you caught me recycling my comment over at Gilliard's place. Just so you know. I wrote it HERE and he got sloppy seconds...

No worries. As you saw, I echoed my post in the comments there, too.

I heard about this on NPR this morning while making my bed. It made the entire experience more enjoyable to say the least!

By the way, I'm assuming I'm not the only one here who laughed out loud in glee when the Yankees outfielders collided in center field, right?

Because that was HI-larious.

Yup. I almost chose the shot of them tangled against the fence for my post...

I don't hate the Yanks, but I do hate the salary system. Nobody should be able to spend as much as George does.

However, I was much more pleased to see the Red Sox swept out of the post season. I don't really know why; I just hate them this year. Last year I rooted for them to win it all, but now I'm just sick of them. Screw Kurt and his bloody sock.

Amen. And after the Astros win, I was dreading the inevitable Clemens-Yankees duel that would paralyze this market for the duration of that series.

Yeah, Schilling came out for Bush bigtime last year. Let 'em go down together.

As if the loss weren't bad enough for the team, here's another Yankee in trouble with the law.

Heehee. I have no idea why I glean so much pleasure from every Yankee loss, but I do. If I ever move to NYC, I will become a Mets fan (anytime, except of course when they are in direct competition with my beloved Cards...who I am counting on to kick some serious Astro ass once again this year!).

Yankee fans are whining about not winning the title since 2000. Boo. Hoo. Stick a pie in yer eye.

Same to BoSox fans. I rooted for their team last year so everyone would shush already about the dumb curse.

The Yankees have more home games than anyone. Every game at Camden Yards is a big pinstriped lovefest. There's no excuse for losing!
