Superbaby

This just in:
"Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage is a new father.

"His wife, Alice Kim Cage, gave birth Monday to a boy, Kal-el Coppola Cage, in New York City, said Cage's Los Angeles-based publicist, Annett Wolf."
This is funny on so many levels.

First, Nick took the stage name of "Cage" because he didn't want the pressure of the family name. Yeah, no pressure in the whole Last Son of Krypton thing.

Second, he was in an actually funny Saturday Night Live skit several years ago as an expectant father who rejected every single baby name because it sounded like it would be mocked by other children. The punch line comes when they get a telegram, and you discover his name is Asswipe Johnson. (Transcript here.) Yeah, no one would ever mock Kal-El, son of Marlon Brando Jor-El.

Drool before Zod!

Marge: What about "Bart"?

Homer: Art, Cart, Dart, Eart . . . nope, I don't see anything wrong with that!

I'm shamed that I forgot that one. Nicely played.

The comedian Louie C.K. has a routine that he wants to name his kid "Ladies and Gentlemen" so that everytime he has to yell at him it would sound like a big deal. "Ladies and gentlemen, can I have your attention?" "Ladies and gentlemen, please be calm!"

This action by Nick Cage has caused my wife to assert that if we have another child I cannot give it a Kryptonic name. I soothed her nerves by saying I was a Marvel kid, and Logan is such a cool name anyway.

I think you should go with a different Marvel tactic and name the kid a first name like "The Amazing" or "The Uncanny."

"The Incredible Carbon Rod" has a nice ring to it.

I'm glad I'm not knowledgeable enough in comics to have recognized that as Superman's birth name. It can be written is Korean letters, so I thought that's what it was.

Perhaps Nic figured out there's a two-syllable pattern and got his wife to agree to the name before he told her what it was. "Bruce Wayne" and "Flash Gordon" would be tough to Koreanize.

Are there named characters in Magic? I don't want to have a kid stealthily named after one someday.

The Daily Show was all over this last night, too. Maybe C&L will have a video clip soon.
