Jedi Mind Tricks

We now bring you Day Three of the Scott McClellan Hostage Watch. In today's episode, Scott tries to convince the White House press corps that two days of repeating "this is an ongoing investigation" over and over again, like the malfunctioning Yul Brenner robot in Westworld, somehow means they've "exhausted discussion" of the Rove scandal.

McCLELLAN: I think we've exhausted discussion on this the last couple of days.

Q: You haven't even scratched the surface.

Q: It hasn't started.

Sure, McClellan is trying to exhaust the press corps with his flopsweat-and-stammer routine, but I don't think it's going to work.

Ari had a baby just in time! I can't imagine how his egghead would have been dancing around these question times, but I'm sure he would have managed to change the subject a little.

Really, Scott should answer some questions, like those about the Wilson family. The Gary Condit method doesn't work.

Well, I think he's sticking to the "we can't make any comments because it's an ongoing investigation" schtick, and that means he can't pick and choose topics. The press is rightfully flaying him alive for commenting back when Rove seemed in the clear, and clamming up now. If he tried to do that in one briefing, they'd rush the podium.

Ari probably would've taken the same approach, but he would've found a way to avoid repeating the same line like the Stepford Spokesman. Somebody needs to buy him a thesaurus and dog-ear the pages with "ongoing," "investigation," and "comment" on them.
