What about Rudy?

If you're like me, you were inspired by Rudy Giuliani's handling of 9/11, respectful of his support for the prez, and eventually disgusted as said support turned to blind faith. In 2003 I would have said that Rudy was my favorite Republican, but his bashing of our troops (he pushed all the blame for the looting of the huge Al Qa Qa weapons depot onto our overworked heroes) rubbed me the wrong way.

But as far as public conservatives go, he's certainly not the worst. Why don't some dems suggest giving him a shot at the Supreme Court? He's mostly okay on social issues, and Lord knows he's established his bona fides regarding the law. He'd give the conservatives fits; how can you oppose America's Mayor?

I'm sure there's 184 reasons not to support a Rudy nomination, but I'd rather see him on the bench than on Air Force 1.

Rudy's not going anywhere -- the Supreme Court or the Oval Office -- until he recants his pro-choice, pro-gay-rights positions. And erases the memories of his bitter and ugly divorce/affair. And destroys all evidence of his cross-dressing appearances on SNL.

He may do that, but I doubt it. Even if he does, the hard-core right wing won't let him through, on fear that he's another Souter.

"Oh, no! Not Souter!"

And as far as "establishing his bona fides" on the law, those of us who lived through Rudy's reign might disagree. He drove the homeless into the East River and gave police brutality a free rein (remember Amadou Diallo getting shot 41 times for reaching to his wallet, or Abner Louima and the plunger?) He shows a moralistic streak that would make him weak on First Amendment issues -- if he drove the porn out of Times Square, he'd do it anywhere, and remember the tizzy over that stupid Mary-and-elephant-dung painting in Brooklyn?

No thanks.

I'm categorically opposed to anyone who would drive porn anywhere except by the truckload into my house.

I think if the dome of silence continues on Penn Avenue all bets are off for who should and shouldn't get the nod.

Bush is going to have to publically distance himself from Rove in order to salvage any strength going into the nominations process.

That will be very difficult given Bush doesn't like to admit poor decisions and generally supports old friends (see Enron good ol'boys.)

He'll probably give Rove a Presidential Medal of Freedom for this.

Sounds good as a Dem who votes Rep it would be a good addition.

My favorite thing in Times Square is porn of a snacking variety--that always-steaming Cup o'Soup.

Rudy used to rank close to McCain, but no more, forevermore. Too much hannitized rhetoric.

Yeah, the more I think about it, I think Rudy is definitely positioning himself for a run. I'd forgotten about the whoring he did during the 2004 GOP convention.

Chuck Hagel is emerging as the voice of Sane Republicans, which, of course, will doom his candidacy. The primary voters like 'em loony.

Personally, I'm praying for a Santorum nomination. Good Lord, that would be great.

I'm with you, Otto. Hagel is acceptable to me, so he must be radioactive to the Rove base. Santorum would be so sweet.

Yeah, I was thinking Rudy was positioning for '08, but you're right that he's got some very un-republican stances. However, I think he'd get a lot of mouthlove from the non-cultural backlash conservatives, even on Fox.

Mrs Thrillhous, what is it with you and McCain? He's just Jesse Helms with a better biography.
