Let Them Eat Photo Ops

In an earlier post, I noted Bush's habit of populating FEMA with old campaign cronies. Well, Think Progress has discovered that the hackery at FEMA goes even deeper. The Chief of Staff and Deputy Chief of Staff were, respectively, an event planner and a media strategist for the Bush-Cheney campaign.

Maybe that's why the government's main response to the catastrophe has been staging more and more photo ops for the president. It's what they're trained for. And, as Dan Froomkin notes, it's their standard approach to a crisis.

Too bad that's not their goddamn job.

UPDATE: Every time I try to mock them, the administration's clowns take it as a dare and go one step beyond. Turns out firefighters have been trying to get to New Orleans for a while, and on Monday they finally got a chance.
"... as specific orders began arriving to the firefighters in Atlanta, a team of 50 Monday morning quickly was ushered onto a flight headed for Louisiana. The crew’s first assignment: to stand beside President Bush as he tours devastated areas."

Form over substanbce is one thing.

Form attacking and undermining substance is another.

New Orleans would have been better off if he had stayed on vacation.

God have mercy.

That's a great rundown by Froomkin on all the political machinations the bush folks are doing. It's incredible how much effort they put into CYA.
